Register of interests

Every entry the member has in the Register of Members' Financial Interests, as Parliament currently publishes it. The wording and values are the member's own declarations; nothing here has been assessed by this site.

Totals add only the entries that declare an amount received: payments for work, donations, gifts, and funded visits (register categories 1.1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Ongoing employment is listed but not added, because its figure is a rate rather than a sum received. Each entry is dated by when the benefit happened, not when it was registered, and placed under the party the member sat for on that date. A member who changed party therefore has a separate total for each.

    Business of the House

The higher education mental health implementation taskforce was convened in 2023 to improve mental health support for higher education students and to ensure that universities were better equipped to support student wellbeing. This taskforce, chaired by Professor Sir Steve West, as the higher education student support champion, was expected to meet until May this year, but no minutes have been published since October 2025. Will the Leader of the House please ask the Department for Education to provide an update on the taskforce’s status, confirm whether Professor West is still in post, and set out when the taskforce expects to publish its final report and recommendations?

    Cask Ale: Intangible Cultural Heritage

My constituency was the proud of home of Banks’s Brewery for more than 150 years, until its closure last year saw production of its signature cask ales either moved elsewhere or discontinued. Those beers were part of our local cultural and historic identity, reflecting generations of skill and pride in our brewing heritage. Does my hon. Friend agree that that heritage deserves protection, and will he join me in supporting the work of organisations such as the Campaign for Real Ale to preserve that heritage for future generations?

    Palestine and Gaza

Palestinian children are the only children in the world who are systematically prosecuted in military courts. Those courts do not meet juvenile justice standards, and Save the Children has found that at every stage of detention, from arrest to interrogation, transfer and incarceration, Israeli soldiers and officials have inflicted physical, mental and emotional abuse and torture on children. What action are this Government taking, with our international partners, to prevent the abuse of well over 300 Palestinian children who are currently being held in Israeli military detention?

    Prostate Cancer Screening

It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Dr Murrison. The early stage of prostate cancer frequently produces no symptoms, which means many men are diagnosed only after the cancer has progressed. Screening offers the possibility of detecting the disease before symptoms develop. The strongest case for targeted screening is for high-risk men. That includes black men, who are twice as likely to develop prostate cancer as non-black men—one in four black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime—and they face a higher risk of dying from the disease. Equal treatment is not necessarily equitable treatment, because black men face a substantially higher risk of developing and dying from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer screening should certainly be available to all black men. My constituent Simeon Greene shared his experience of prostate cancer and the devastating impact the disease can have on black men and their families. He is a black man of African-Caribbean heritage and the youngest of four brothers. Tragically, all four brothers were diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 50, and all three of Simeon’s brothers have now died from the disease. The impact on his family has extended to the next generation; the son of Simeon’s eldest brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of just 39. His family’s experience demonstrates the devastating consequences of prostate cancer, particularly when it affects men at such a young age. We owe it to families like Simeon’s to amplify efforts to raise awareness, encourage early conversations about prostate cancer, and improve earlier detection and access to appropriate care. No family should have to endure what Simeon’s family has. We also need to provide greater support for trusted community organisations, which can play a vital role in raising awareness of prostate cancer and encouraging men to seek advice. The Wolves Foundation in my constituency recently hosted an event which used the reach of football to get men talking about the disease. They worked with local NHS specialists and those with personal experience of prostate cancer.

    Performance of Royal Mail

We have heard repeatedly that Royal Mail has failed for a number of years and that Ofcom has repeatedly fined Royal Mail to no effect. Does my hon. Friend agree that we should look not at how Royal Mail might go out of business, but perhaps at a new business model for Royal Mail to take over? That might just be the renationalisation of Royal Mail.

    Business of the House

A constituent of mine suffers from Turner syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects only females and for which there is no cure. She has been relying on medication for over 40 years to manage her symptoms. She cannot get a medical exemption certificate because Turner syndrome is not on the medical exemption list; that list was established more than 60 years ago, and has not been meaningfully updated since 2009. Will the Leader of the House please ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to review the list and consider adding Turner syndrome to it, not only on behalf of my constituent, but for around 15,000 women and girls in the United Kingdom living with Turner syndrome?

    E-scooters and E-bikes: Regulation

Many people in my constituency feel frightened and intimidated when just walking on the pavement runs the risk of them colliding with an e-scooter or e-bike. I have raised the matter with the police, but they say they are unable to take action unless the riders are caught riding the vehicle. Does the hon. Member agree that we need greater enforcement powers, clearer national guidance and stronger controls on the sale of illegal e-scooters and e-bikes, so that we can better protect our residents and restore confidence in our neighbourhoods?

    Business of the House

Many families who inherit retirement properties with age-restricted occupancy requirements are finding them increasingly difficult to sell, and bereaved relatives, many of whom are pensioners themselves, can face years of ongoing service charges, council tax liabilities, maintenance costs and significant loss in property value, which cause considerable financial and mental distress. Will the Leader of the House please facilitate a meeting with the Minister of State for Housing and Planning so we can discuss these issues with the retirement housing sector and see how bereaved families in this situation can be helped?

    Jagtar Singh Johal

I pay tribute to my hon. Friend the Member for West Dunbartonshire (Douglas McAllister) for his tireless work on behalf of Jagtar Singh Johal and his family. I know about that work, because I have had regular meetings with my hon. Friend about his constituent. I thank him for his efforts, and for the open and collaborative way in which he has always engaged with me. In my constituency of Wolverhampton West, some 15% of the population is Sikh—one of the highest percentages in the country. Sikh and non-Sikh constituents have contacted me, deeply concerned about Jagtar’s treatment and the way that his case has been handled, and urging the Government to do more to ensure the just resolution of his case. When I previously raised Jagtar’s case in the House, I mentioned the United Nations working group’s finding that his detention was arbitrary and his fair trial rights had been violated. The allegations of torture and the extraordinary delays in the proceedings remain deeply troubling. It appears that the rules of natural justice and the rule of law simply did not apply to Jagtar’s case. I warmly welcome Jagtar’s release on bail. For him and his family, who have had so many setbacks, this is an immensely important step, but the conditions of his bail are still unfair. His passport has been surrendered, his freedom remains severely restricted and he cannot come home to Scotland. He continues to face allegations that could result in the death penalty. His release from prison is certainly not the end of our efforts. Next month, it will be nine years since Jagtar was arrested on the streets of Punjab in India, but nine years later, there has not been a single conviction against Jagtar. Those are years that Jagtar and his family can never recover, and they have endured great suffering during that period. I urge the Government to use every diplomatic channel available, at the highest level, to secure a resolution of Jagtar’s case without any further delay, so that he can safely return home. Will the Minister explain what steps are being taken to achieve this? How many times have we heard in this House that justice delayed is justice denied? Jagtar Singh Johal has already had his justice delayed for far too long.
