Parliament's party history for this member: Labour ( – present).
Register of interests
Every entry the member has in the Register of Members' Financial Interests, as Parliament currently publishes it. The wording and values are the member's own declarations; nothing here has been assessed by this site.
Totals add only the entries that declare an amount received: payments for work, donations, gifts, and funded visits (register categories 1.1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Ongoing employment is listed but not added, because its figure is a rate rather than a sum received. Each entry is dated by when the benefit happened, not when it was registered, and placed under the party the member sat for on that date. A member who changed party therefore has a separate total for each.
I, too, am a member of USDAW the union. My constituents want to work for Poundland, and they have helped it turn a profit at Midland Road in Walsall. Can the Minister ensure that USDAW is at the table in any negotiation? It has struck deals with Ikea and John Lewis, and its knowledge is valuable.
Order. Could Members please remain standing so that the Clerk can make a note of how many wish to speak? Given the numbers, I will have to impose a hard time limit of four minutes.
I will call Jon Trickett to move the motion. I will then call the Minister to respond. I remind other Members that they may make a speech only with prior permission from the Member in charge of the debate and the Minister. There will not be an opportunity for the Member in charge to wind up, as is the convention for 30-minute debates.
I thank Members: we got everyone in, and we did not have to suspend for the vote.
Question put and agreed to.
Resolved,
That this House has considered progress towards a smokefree UK.
May I ask the Leader of the House if we can have a debate in Government time on the best use of public money? Some £50 million has been allocated for a free school—against Government policy and against the evidence. Some £38 million has been drawn down by Oak academy trust, which was set up under covid, so it is not clear why it is needed now, and which distorts the publishing market. There is also the contentious transaction involving Walsall College and the closure of Walsall Leather Museum—none of this benefits my constituents, who do not want any of this. Could we have a debate on the best use of public money?
